Answers, in plain words.

If your question isn’t here, get in touch. If someone is in danger, call 112 first.

Your account

Who can use Happenous?

Anyone 18 or over, in India. Happenous asks for your date of birth the first time you ask to join or host an Activity, and won’t continue for anyone younger. It’s free, and there’s nothing to pay for in the app.

What do I need to sign up?

An email address and a password of at least 12 characters; a phone number is optional. Then your name, your city and at least three things you’re into. Nobody else using Happenous sees your email or phone number.

What does confirming my email do?

You can confirm your email address from Settings, under Security. It shows that the address is yours and that email from us reaches it. It doesn’t verify who you are, and whether you’ve done it isn’t shown to other people.

I’ve forgotten my password.

On the sign-in screen, tap “Forgot your password?” and enter your email address. We send a six-digit code to that address. Setting a new password signs you out on every device, so you’ll need to sign in again everywhere.

I think someone else has got into my account.

Change your password, then go to Settings, Security, “Signed in on” and end any sessions you don’t recognise. Then tell us.

Why didn’t I get a notification last night?

Most notifications are held between 10 PM and 7 AM, India time, and arrive in the morning. A cancelled Activity is still sent straight away. You can choose what you hear about in Settings, under Notifications.

Is there a web version?

No. Happenous is an app for Android and iPhone, because check-in happens on a phone at the meeting point. This website is just where you find it.

Joining an Activity

How do I join an Activity?

Open it from Happening and tap “Request to join”. Confirm each thing the Host has asked for, add a note if you want to, and send it. The Host accepts, declines or waitlists you.

Why can’t I see exactly where it is?

Until the Host accepts you, every Activity shows only an approximate area, about 3 km across. Once you’re in the Crew you see the exact meeting point. If you leave the Crew, it’s hidden from you again. More about location

What does being on the waitlist mean?

The Crew was full, or the Host would take you if someone drops out. If a place opens up, it’s offered to people on the waitlist. You can leave the waitlist at any time.

My request expired.

A request the Host hasn’t answered expires an hour before the meet-up, so nobody is left not knowing whether to go. You can look for something else, or ask to join the Host’s next one.

I can’t make it any more.

If your request hasn’t been answered, take it back. If you’re already in the Crew, open the Activity and tap “Can’t make it”, with a word for the Host if you like. Your place goes to someone on the waitlist, and it doesn’t count against you.

Who pays for things like court bookings?

If an Activity has a cost, the Host lists it, in rupees, before anyone asks to join. It’s settled between the Host and the Crew. Happenous doesn’t handle money.

Check-in

When can I check in?

From an hour before the meet-up time until the Activity ends. Open the Activity, or Activity Mode from the banner, and tap “Check in”. Only people the Host accepted into the Crew can check in.

The code isn’t working.

The Host’s code changes every five minutes, and the previous one works for one more minute. Ask the Host for the code on their screen now, and check it’s for this Activity. In Activity Mode, “Need the code” lets the Host know. You can also type the six characters instead of scanning.

There’s no signal at the meeting point.

Check in anyway. Your check-in is saved on your phone with the time you entered it, and goes through as soon as you have signal again, even if you close the app. It counts if the code was valid when you typed it.

I was there, but I didn’t check in.

After the Activity, open “See how it went” and tap “I was there”. The Host is asked to confirm it, and once they do, it counts like a check-in.

Why does check-in matter so much?

It’s how Happenous knows who actually turned up. Reviews, Moments and Recognition all depend on it, which is why a review on Happenous always comes from someone who met you.

Hosting

The whole picture is on For Hosts.

What do I need to host?

To be 18 or over, and to accept the Host Code before you publish. Then three steps: what you’re doing, when and where, and who can come.

Can I change the plan after publishing?

Yes, before it starts: the time, the meeting point and the number of places. The Crew is told what changed. If it moves more than 2 km or 2 hours, they’re also told they can leave without it counting against them. The category, requirements and house rules can’t be changed, because they’re what people agreed to.

How do I cancel?

Open the Activity and cancel it. Everyone in the Crew and everyone waiting to hear back is told straight away, with your reason if you give one. Please cancel as early as you can.

Can I host the same thing again?

Yes. “Host this again” on a past Activity copies everything and asks only for the new day.

Can I keep an Activity to people I know?

Choose “Buddies” when you publish, and only your Buddies can find it. Choose “Invited” and nobody can find it: you invite Buddies by name, or share a private link, which you can turn off at any time. Either way you still accept everyone who asks to join.

Someone came but didn’t check in.

They can say “I was there” after the Activity, and you confirm it from the Crew list.

Safety and reporting

How it all works is on the Safety page.

How do I report someone or something?

From the profile, the Activity, the message or the Moment — use the report option there and say what happened. The report stays attached to what it’s about, which helps our Trust & Safety team act on it. The person isn’t told who reported them.

What happens when I block someone?

It works both ways. You don’t appear in each other’s search, can’t message each other or join each other’s Activities, and don’t see each other’s Moments. Any Buddy connection ends. You can unblock from Settings, under Safety, but you won’t be Buddies again automatically.

What happens after I report?

A person on our Trust & Safety team reviews it and can lock or remove an Activity or a Moment, or suspend or remove an account. We don’t tell you the outcome. The contact page sets out how long we take.

Something is wrong at an Activity right now.

If you’re in danger, call 112. Activity Mode has a button for it. You can leave at any time, without a reason. When you’re safe, report the person or the Activity in the app.

Something on Happenous is about me, and I don’t have an account.

Email our Grievance Officer. The contact page says what to include. You don’t need to sign up for us to act on it.

Privacy, your data, and deleting your account

The Privacy Policy has every detail.

Who can see my profile?

You choose in Settings. Public: anyone. Buddies: your Buddies see everything, other people signed in see your name, @handle and photo. Private: only your Buddies see your name, @handle and photo, and only they can find you in search. Your phone number is never shown to anyone.

Does Happenous track my location?

No. If you allow location, your phone’s approximate position is sent when you look at For You or Nearby, to find Activities near you, and isn’t saved on our servers. If you don’t, Happenous uses the centre of your city. Nobody is ever shown where you are.

How do I get a copy of my data?

Go to Settings, Your data, and tap “Export my data”. You get one file with everything Happenous holds about your account, which you can save or send wherever you like. Your password is left out, and so are reports and review notes other people wrote about you.

How do I delete my account?

Go to Settings, Your data. Enter your password and type DELETE to confirm. Your profile, photos, Moments and Buddies are erased, your messages are withdrawn, and Activities you host that haven’t started are cancelled, with everyone coming told. The email and phone number you signed up with are kept apart for 180 days, as Indian law requires, then deleted. It can’t be undone, so export a copy first if you want one.

Still stuck?

Reporting from inside the app is fastest for anything about a person, an Activity, a message or a Moment. For everything else, including complaints about how we’ve handled something, contact us.
